Dental Checkups
Who needs a dental check-up?
- The American Dental Association recommends that all healthy adults and children, starting at the age of one, should see the dentist every six months. Even if you don’t have teeth, a check up is recommended to maintain health, maintain removable appliances and check for oral cancer.
What is a Dental check-up? What happens at a Dental Check-up?
- The content of a dental exam differs from dentist to dentist, at Elma Family Dental a check up visit often starts with one of our hygienists or one of the doctors completing an oral exam, jaw exam, and cancer screening. We will inspect your mouth, head and neck, and the lymph nodes around your jaw. After this, we will look inside the mouth and make sure that the soft tissues and tongue are free of any sores or growths. To determine if your bite is working properly, we will have you open and close your mouth repeatedly a few times and check for any signs of clenching, grinding or joint disorder.
- The dental checkup visit will proceed with the dental hygienist measuring and checking your gums to make sure they are in perfect health (no inflammation, bleeding, bone loss, nor recession) and then usually she will complete a routine dental cleaning. We will finish the dental exam by inspecting your teeth visually and often with radiographs (x-rays). Any treatment that you have had will be charted and checked.
How often do I need a cleaning?
- The American Dental Association and Elma Family Dental recommend that most everyone should see the dentist for a regular cleaning and check up every six months.
- People at a greater risk for oral diseases should have dental check ups more than twice a year. Tobacco and alcohol use, diabetes, pregnancy, periodontal and gum disease, poor oral hygiene and certain medical conditions are some of the many factors that we take into consideration when deciding how often you need your dental cleaning and check up.
Periodontal Therapy
Gum disease continues to be the leading cause of tooth loss in adults today. A devastating condition when left untreated, periodontitis doesn’t have to write your story. But a strategic approach with focused treatment and home care is essential to control this chronic bacterial infection. Plus, this disease can aggravate other serious medical conditions that may seem unrelated to your mouth. Learn more about periodontal therapy
